Site Visit: Elevating a 1960s Gem

Modest to Marvellous.

Recently we made a site visit to one of our ongoing projects in Oxfordshire, which left us inspired and excited about the transformation taking place. The project involves extensive alterations to a modest 1960s semi-detached dwelling, turning it into a contemporary family home that not only respects its existing structure but also takes full advantage of its stunning surroundings overlooking the Oxfordshire countryside.

The primary objective of this project is to create a modern family home by making significant alterations to the existing structure. The key elements of the transformation include a full internal rearrangement, the creation of a new and enlarged entrance hall, and the replacement of a detached garage with an integral garage. The front of the house has been elevated to introduce a contemporary feel, achieved through the use of dark metal roofing. Importantly, the design maintains the scale and forms that respect the property's contextual relationship as a semi-detached dwelling.

One of the most striking features of the project is the extension to the rear of the house. The addition of dark metal, timber cladding, and large expanses of glazing will not only bring a contemporary touch but will also harmonise with the existing structure. This elevation not only adds aesthetic value but also provides a unique vantage point, taking advantage of the property's location on the edge of a field overlooking the picturesque Oxfordshire countryside.

Inside the dwelling, a full internal re-arrangement is underway to optimise the spatial layout for modern living. The open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area on the ground floor seamlessly connect to the rear garden, enhancing the indoor-outdoor flow and making the most of the scenic views. Upstairs, a grand principal bedroom suite is taking shape, complete with vaulted ceilings, apex glazing, and a private balcony, providing a luxurious retreat with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

The design philosophy behind this project is rooted in maximizing the connection between the dwelling and its natural surroundings. The rear extensions, particularly the open-plan living space, aim to create a seamless transition between the interior and the garden, emphasizing the relationship between the home and the Oxfordshire countryside.

This visit left us excited and we are confident that the combination of architectural enhancements, interior reconfiguration, and a strong connection to the surrounding landscape promises a family home that not only respects its historical roots but also embraces contemporary living. We look forward to witnessing the completion of this project and the creation of a truly remarkable residence on the edge of the Oxfordshire countryside.
