Narnia
A Magical Fusion of Contemporary Design and Timeless Tradition.
Nestled next to the famous C. S. Lewis House in Oxford, Narnia is an enchanting replacement dwelling that masterfully combines contemporary design with traditional local materials, creating a unique and magical home. Aptly named Narnia, this project includes whimsical features like a wardrobe concealing the cloakroom, paying tribute to the great writer's works while offering a modern living space designed to be as timeless as his stories.
The design brief called for a generous open-plan living area that maximizes connections to the garden, with an emphasis on indoor-outdoor living. This includes an outdoor kitchen and BBQ area, perfect for entertaining. Large expanses of glazing capture stunning views of the garden and the C.S. Lewis Nature Reserve beyond. Each bedroom was thoughtfully designed to frame views of the surrounding trees and skyline, ensuring a serene and picturesque experience.
The design is a modern interpretation of the local house styles and forms, incorporating horizontal timber boarding, slate, and natural stone. It harmoniously blends contemporary aesthetics with traditional materials, creating a home that is both innovative and reflective of its historic surroundings.
Narnia was designed with sustainability at its core, incorporating several key features to minimise its environmental impact. A ground source heat pump will efficiently provide heating and cooling, reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Photovoltaic (PV) panels will generate renewable energy, contributing to the home's electricity needs and lowering its carbon footprint. Additionally, EV charging will support the use of electric vehicles, promoting greener transportation options. Horizontal solar shading will reduce heat gain during summer months, improving energy efficiency and comfort. These sustainable elements will ensure that Narnia is not only a modern and aesthetically pleasing home but also an environmentally responsible one.
