The Black Barn
A Contemporary Reimagining of Rural Heritage.
We recently secured planning approval for The Black Barn project.
Located in Chelmsford, this project transforms the site of an existing Dutch barn into a striking modern home, drawing inspiration from traditional agricultural buildings while embracing contemporary living.
Our clients have navigated a long and challenging path, working with multiple architects and facing various applications, appeals, and redesigns without success. When we took on the project, we saw an opportunity to start fresh—rethinking the design approach, addressing planning concerns, and crafting a home that is both respectful of its rural context and suited for modern life.
The approved design reinterprets the barn typology with:
Black vertical and horizontal timber boarding, evoking traditional farm structures.
Light-diffusing louvers, balancing privacy with natural illumination.
A durable metal roof, ensuring longevity and enhancing the barn aesthetic.
This carefully considered material palette allows the home to blend seamlessly into its surroundings while maintaining a bold, refined presence.
A huge thank you to our incredible clients for their trust and perseverance.
